Debiased Machine Learning: Identification, Estimation, and Shape Constraints
Qihui Chen、Ka Yan Cheng、Zheng Fang · econ.EM math.ST stat.ME·

We develop a general framework of identification and estimation for automatic debiased machine learning (DML) where the parameter of interest $θ_0$ is identified by a moment condition involving a nuisance $γ_0$ that may be high dimensional. DML leverages machine learning to estimate $γ_0$ while correcting for regularization and overfitting biases that may otherwise transmit to biased estimation of⋯

Inference on counterfactual distributions using martingale posteriors
Gregor Steiner、Mark Steel · stat.ME econ.EM·

Causal inference is often focused on average effects, which can hide important aspects of the effect distributions. Here we consider the entire posterior effects distribution by estimating full counterfactual outcome distributions. We propose a methodology for inference on counterfactual distributions which builds upon the martingale posterior framework of Fong et al. (2023). This provides a highl⋯

Optimum Multiple Sampling Plan Based on the Process Capability Index $C_{py}$ Under Type-II Hybrid Censoring
Rajat Das、Tanmay Kayal、Yogesh Mani Tripathi 等 · stat.AP math.OC·

This paper proposes a stage independent multiple sampling plan (SIMSP) to improve inspection efficiency by reducing the number of samples required at each sampling stage. Unlike conventional multiple sampling plans (MSP), the proposed SIMSP eliminates the dependence of each sampling stage on the outcome of the preceding inspection. The proposed approach is developed for non-repairable products sol⋯

Integrating Structure and Attributes for Transportation Network Partitioning via Optimal Transport
Ketsia Guichard-Sustowski、Loïc Le Marrec、Véronique Thelen · stat.AP·

Transportation network partitioning is essential for applications such as traffic analysis, simulation, and mobility pattern identification. However, transportation networks combine structural information with heterogeneous operational attributes, ranging from scalar indicators to temporal profiles. Existing approaches generally rely on predefined formulations to integrate these sources of informa⋯

Bayesian Feature Extraction using Gaussian and Diffused-gamma Priors for High Dimensional Spatio-Temporal Data
Garrett Frady、Dipak K. Dey、Shariq Mohammed · stat.ME q-bio.QM stat.AP·

High-dimensional data with sparse structure and spatio-temporal dependence arise in many scientific domains. We develop a Bayesian feature-extraction framework for spatio-temporal settings that employs Gaussian and Diffused-gamma priors to induce structured sparsity. The modeling framework specifies a general likelihood via Bregman divergence, enabling compatibility with a range of loss functions⋯

7/27
Coarsening-adjusted estimators for finite-population indicators
Gaia Bertarelli、Aldo Gardini · stat.ME stat.AP·

Self-reported numerical variables in sample surveys are frequently subject to coarsening, as respondents tend to report rounded or heaped values rather than the exact underlying quantity. While the statistical literature offers various model-based solutions, official statistics and public health surveillance routinely require design-based inference on finite-population indicators under complex sam⋯

Memory operator ensembles indicate proximity to criticality in simulated AMOC transitions
Mauricio Herrera-Marín · stat.AP math.DS physics.ao-ph·

Classical early-warning signals assume that recovery slows near a tipping point, but in a well-studied CESM simulation of AMOC collapse, autocorrelation and variance decrease instead. We develop a preregistered diagnostic that uses only past data to estimate the slowest mode of a memory operator fitted to the evolving overturning structure. The operator ensemble produces an exploratory alarm 77 ye⋯

A World of Ginis
Lidia Ceriani、Paolo Verme · econ.GN stat.AP·

The Gini index remains the most important measure of economic inequality worldwide, and accurate estimates of this index are essential for effective public policies. Yet, Gini estimates for the same country and year vary considerably across data sources, a problem that remains largely unresolved. The paper reviews the largest global and regional databases providing Gini estimates, surveys the rela⋯

Simulation-Free Bayesian Power and Sample Size Calculations for Bayes Factors in Single-Arm Phase II Trials with Binary Endpoints
Riko Kelter、Kathrin Möllenhoff · stat.ME stat.AP·

Bayes factors provide a coherent Bayesian measure of evidence for competing hypotheses and have recently been used as the basis for single-arm phase II trial designs with binary endpoints. In contrast to classical power analyses based on test statistics and p-values, Bayes-factor based sample size calculations target high probabilities of obtaining compelling evidence either for a relevant treatme⋯

7/26
Robust estimation of the autocorrelation function via forward ratios
A. Montañés、E. Ruiz · econ.EM·

It is obvious to say that an adequate estimation of the autocorrelation function is central in time series analysis. In this paper, we propose three new robust estimators based on ratios of observations, which offer strong resistance against outliers. While the first estimator, which is based on the median, is not efficient, the second is a Quasi Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator with better effi⋯

Systemic Methodological Dysfunction in Statistical Research for Clinical Decisions
Charles F. Manski · econ.EM stat.ME·

I critique a set of entrenched methodological conventions that collectively create systemic dysfunction in statistical research for clinical decisions. These include: (1) the prevalent use of hypothesis tests to compare treatments, (2) remoteness from patient care of the methods used to evaluate the accuracy of predictions of patient outcomes, (3) poor practice of meta-analysis to combine findings⋯

The One-Period Kyle (1985) Model Has a Unique Equilibrium: A Monotone Gaussian Bayes inverse-rigidity theorem
Rabee Tourky · math.PR econ.EM econ.TH·

Let $V$ and $U$ be independent standard normal random variables. For any Borel map $φ\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$, set $Y_φ=φ(V)+U$, and define $P_φ(y)=\mathbb{E}[V\mid Y_φ=y]$ and $F_φ(x)=\mathbb{E}[P_φ(x+U)]$. We prove that, if for every $v\in\mathbb{R}$, the quantity $φ(v)$ maximises $x(v-F_φ(x))$ over $x\in\mathbb{R}$, then $φ$ is the identity function. This is the normalised one-period Kyle⋯

The SNB is institutionally sound and on a solid footing. 2026-04-24 - Martin Schlegel: Comments on Swiss monetary policy

The world is going through a period of great uncertainty. As a central bank, we have to accept this as it is - and deal with the uncertainty. The past 25 years have seen several phases of great uncertainty. Nevertheless, the SNB has achieved its objective of price stability. The Swiss economy has also developed favourably overall. We were able to do so because three prerequisites for our work were⋯

2026-04-16 - Petra Tschudin / Thomas Moser: Swipe, scan, tap: the cashless payments market

Payments are the backbone of a modern economy. Virtually no goods would change hands and virtually no services would be provided in today's world without a functioning payments system. From a macroeconomic perspective, resilience and efficiency are the overarching objectives in the payments system. Payment methods must be secure and, where possible, available continuously; and they must be technic⋯

Ugo Panizza, Francesco Tripoli, Beatrice Weder di Mauro·

The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) rests on the premise that one carbon credit compensates for one tonne of emissions. While a growing body of evidence questions the integrity of many credits, much less is known about whether the ability to offset affects firms’ incentives to reduce their own emissions. Using a buyer-linked dataset covering the near-universe of offset retirements, we exploit the 20⋯

DP21787 The China Backlash: Quantifying the Narrative Discourse on China
Mert Geyiktepe, Dani Rodrik·

Using text-as-data methods, we quantify the U.S. discourse on China, place it in historical perspective, and compare its evolution across different sources of public narrative. Our analysis is based on a large corpus of materials drawn from public records (presidential and congressional records, newspaper articles, social media, think tank reports). We develop two measures of narrative discourse:⋯

DP21786 An Empirical Framework for Platform Markets
Lapo Filistrucchi, Tobias Klein·

Quantifying merger effects and conducting other counterfactual analyses is often difficult in platform markets because direct and indirect network effects link demand within and across market sides. We develop a general empirical framework for two-sided markets that incorporates these effects within an otherwise standard empirical IO approach. The framework does not impose a particular demand spec⋯

DP21782 Long-Run Effects of Universal Pre-Primary Education Expansion: Evidence from Argentina
Samuel Berlinski, Guillermo Cruces, Sebastian Galiani, Paul Gertler, Fabian Gonzalez·

We study the long-run effects of a large public expansion of pre-primary education in Argentina. Between 1993 and 1999, the federal government financed the construction of new preschool classrooms targeted to departments with low baseline enrollment and high poverty, creating roughly 186,000 additional places. We link administrative records on classroom construction to four population censuses and⋯

DP21780 Life After Divorce: Effects of Joint Custody on Parents and Children
Stella Canessa, Gordon Dahl, Anna Hasselqvist, Costas Meghir, Susan Niknami, Marten Palme, Helmut Rainer, Olof Rosenqvist, Pengpeng Xiao·

Abstract: Divorce reshapes family life, yet little is known about one of its most consequential features: the allocation of child custody. We study the impact of joint versus sole custody on both parents and children using rich administrative data from Sweden linked to over 25 years of newly-collected court custody rulings. To address selection concerns, we exploit random assignment of custody dis⋯

DP21779 Policy Thresholds as Growth Barriers: Theory and Evidence from a Payroll Tax Notch
Sami Jysmä, Youssef Benzarti, Jarkko Harju·

Discrete policy thresholds are pervasive in tax and regulatory systems and can substantially distort behavior. We show that notches acting as barriers to mobility within a distribution generate distortions extending far beyond the threshold. The same mechanism biases conventional difference-in-differences estimators, and we propose a new methodology to recover causal effects. Applying the method t⋯

Using administrative data on the largest group of German labor market entrants - graduates from an apprenticeship in a specific occupation - this paper studies the effect of entry conditions on occupational mismatch. Higher entry unemployment entails persistent earnings losses driven by full-time wage effects. Concurrently, occupational matching falls, accounting for 20% of the wage effect. A fram⋯

Countries' Tax Effort: Disentangling the Frontier Tax Gap
Ricardo Fenochietto、Carola Pessino、Nicole Fenochietto·

Using Stochastic Frontier Analysis, this paper updates, for 123 countries, the estimates of tax capacity—defined as the maximum level of revenue a country can feasibly achieve— and tax effort —measured as the ratio of actual tax revenue to tax capacity. It also introduces two novel models that decompose the frontier tax gap —the difference between actual tax revenues and tax capacity— into tax pol⋯

Till the IRS Do Us Part: (Optimal) Taxation of Households
Holter, Hans、Krueger, Dirk、Stepanchuk, Serhiy·

This paper argues that a progressive tax system combined with individual taxation of married couples can generate more revenue than the current household-based U.S. system, especially when the extra revenues do not induce negative labor supply effects through increased government transfers. A progressive system that taxes individuals rather than couples jointly leads to larger labor force particip⋯

Does Global Financial Transparency Improve Tax Compliance in Developing Countries?
Niels Johannesen、Lauge Larsen、Nadine Riedel·

In a coordinated effort to curb tax evasion, governments systematically exchange information about bank accounts with foreign owners. Petter Bjerksund、Guttorm Schjelderup·

This paper analyzes the valuation of publicly traded stocks subject to capital income and wealth taxation when expected returns are time-varying. The Elasticity of Corporate Taxable Income Across Countries
Agostini, Claudio、Asatryan, Zareh、Bach, Laurent 等·

Do firms respond similarly to corporate tax incentives across countries? We provide globally comparable estimates of the corporate elasticity of taxable income using administrative tax return data from sixteen countries and a unified empirical framework. Exploiting bunching at a common kink, zero taxable income, we estimate elasticities ranging from 0.08 to 1.9, with an average of 0.79. To explain⋯

Navigating the Amazon: The Incidence of Digital Service Taxes
Dominika Langenmayr、Rohit Reddy Muddasani·

Firms in the digital economy often pay little tax in the countries where their customers are based. In response, market countries have introduced digital service taxes on the revenue of these firms to indirectly tax their profits. We study the incidence of these taxes using data on Amazon, the largest online retailer. We find that in most countries, Amazon increased its fees by roughly the amount⋯

Stable Taxation in Frictional Labor Markets
Kiarsi, Mehrab、Rendahl, Pontus·

This paper studies optimal fiscal policy in an economy with frictional labor markets. Labor market frictions therefore do not overturn the basic tax smoothing principle: taxes remain stable while debt adjusts to fi⋯

Naruki Notsu、Haruaki Hirota·

This paper studies how administrative consolidation affects the performance and cost of fiscal capacity. Tomoyuki Nakajima·

I study optimal taxation in a directed–search economy with moral hazard, in which firms post output–contingent wage contracts that provide workers with insurance and incentives. This paper provides a full characterization of the competitive effects of horizontal mergers in the Cournot model with heterogeneous firms and constant marginal costs. The Apples and Oranges Tribunal
Alex Tabarrok·

Suppose that apples sell for more than oranges and Parliament in it’s wisdom decides that, at last, apples and oranges must be compared. The Confucian fertility paradox
Tyler Cowen·

Total fertility rates in East Asia have fallen to levels without historical precedent, even though the region’s Confucian heritage long placed extraordinary emphasis on family continuity and large families. Tyler Cowen·

Could our preoccupation with mental health be part of the problem? In some ways, encouraging people to think and talk more about their mental health is a good thing. The Decline in the Transmission of Scientific Ideas
Tyler Cowen·

We document that the diffusion of new scientific ideas beyond their field of origin has declined substantially over the past four decades. This contraction is closely linked to increasing specialization in scientific language: research that employs more technical terminology tends to be adopted less broadly. We develop a theory of scientific discovery in which the […] The post The Decline in the T⋯

In relative terms, maybe children do not cost more than before?
Tyler Cowen·

Despite rapid inflation in childcare and tuition prices, the goods-and-services CCI closely tracks adult prices, as these increases are offset by children’s lower exposure to shelter and by slower price growth elsewhere in the child basket. Households devote substantially more real resources to children than they did in 1990, but this increase parallels the growth […] The post In relative terms, m⋯

Tyler Cowen·

When a new technology promises large private benefits but may impose social costs that markets do not price, demand need not reveal how citizens want it governed. Are single GPU research still published in ML/DL and its applications nowadays? Which are the most notable recent ones? [D]

ML research is progressing at breakneck speed where frontier labs in both academia and industry have access to considerably large computes (GPUs). Where do small labs or independent researchers go in this context? Have you come across recent works in ML/DL and its applications (vision, language, speech, etc) where the work is good but it uses very limited compute? Maybe even single GPU workstation⋯

I'm really confused about what the point of the prompt injection was (speaking as an author). Is it just a study? I would really prefer that they took action against the AI-generated reviews. Obviously, we cannot assume that the reviewers were copy-pasting the output from the LLM without having given it any look at all, but in some cases that does look to be the case. In fact, in some cases the me⋯

How Can the Horizon Problem in Cooperatives Be Solved?
/u/Few_Government_6401·

Worker-managed cooperatives have long been argued in the economic literature to face a structural horizon problem. The theoretical rationale is tha⋯

Most discussions of the student loan crisis seem to come down to two extremes. full forgiveness or doing nothing.
